Hans Figura (1898–1978)
Hans Figura was an Austrian painter and master printmaker whose color aquatints and paintings captured the architecture, landscapes, and everyday character of Europe and the United States. Born in 1898 in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Figura studied at Vienna's leading graphic arts institutions before devoting his career to painting and printmaking. He later maintained studios in both Vienna and New York, exhibiting internationally throughout Europe and America.
Figura is best known for his richly colored aquatint etchings, a demanding printmaking technique that allowed him to achieve remarkable depth, atmosphere, and detail. His work celebrates Alpine villages, historic European cities, bustling harbors, quiet streets, and architectural landmarks with a combination of precision and warmth. While many collectors recognize his prints, his original oil paintings reveal the same sensitivity to light, season, and place that made his graphic work so admired.
During a career spanning more than five decades, Hans Figura produced hundreds of etchings and paintings that are now held in museums, galleries, and private collections worldwide. His work remains especially popular among collectors of Austrian art, European landscapes, cityscapes, and twentieth-century printmaking. Whether depicting a snow-covered Tyrolean village, a quiet canal, or an iconic American skyline, Figura's compositions continue to be appreciated for their craftsmanship, technical mastery, and timeless appeal.
