Ernest Hamlin Baker: Put the Railroads Ahead of the Game War Poster

Ernest Hamlin Baker: Put the Railroads Ahead of the Game War Poster

Ernest Hamlin Baker (1889–1975)
American illustrator and poster artist, widely known for his World War I propaganda imagery.

Original World War I lithographic poster, printed ca. 1917–1918 in the United States, promoting railroad workers’ contribution to the war effort.

This striking patriotic poster exhorts railroad workers to support the war effort, declaring that “victory in the war is dependent upon efficient transportation.” Above a boldly rendered steam locomotive, a dynamic red-inked soldier with bayonet lunges forward, visually linking the urgency of battle to the vital work of moving troops and matériel by rail. The design’s bold contrast and illustrative energy exemplify early 20th-century American wartime mobilization imagery, marrying functional messaging with compelling composition.
