Axel Herman Haig: Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France
Axel Herman Haig: Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy, France
Mont Saint-Michel c.1882
Axel Herman Haig (1835–1921)
Swedish-born artist and architect, active in Britain’s Gothic Revival tradition.
Original etching on paper.
Signed bottom right.
One of Haig’s larger etchings. Haig’s Mont Saint-Michel evokes the majestic medieval abbey set against its broad tidal flats. The composition rises from small figures along the foreground shore to the clustered village buildings and ultimately to the soaring abbey silhouette above, rendered with precise architectural linework and atmospheric tonal contrast.
Trained in architecture, Haig brought structural accuracy and romantic interpretation to his etchings of historic European sites, helping renew interest in etching as a fine art form in the late 19th century.
